R-Type III was initially exclusively available on the Super NES, but it was eventually converted to the Game Boy Advance. It was the series’ first game to feature new forces. In addition to the initial force, the player might select one of two alternative forces: the shadow force or the cyclone force. Both of them have new weapon sets and notable improvements. The weaponry and charging system were also improved. It returned to the original red-blue-yellow weapon system, and the R-Type II Diffusion Wave Cannon was replaced with a more basic wave cannon. When this cannon is fully charged, it produces a gigantic, intense beam that goes through all adversaries and obstructions. The ship also received a new weapon called the Hyper Wave Cannon, which the player may utilize instead of the standard wave cannon. The ship momentarily obtains the ability to use the Hyper Wave Cannon, unique among wave cannons with a fast firing capability, by switching to Hyper mode and supercharging the wave cannon. The guns fired cause devastating explosions, and if the player possesses one or two bits, they spin around the ship, emitting energy. However, after a brief time in hyper mode, the ship overheats and must spend seconds cooling down, during which time the wave cannon is inoperative.
